Exhibition Information
Since 2013, I have been photographing various groups of Italy’s native cowboys known as the Butteri. The Butteri are the cattle breeders and horsemen of Maremma, a rugged coastal region spanning from southern Tuscany to northern Lazio and along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Their origins are believed to date back to Etruscan times. They also have a deep connection to Buffalo Bill and the American West, as well as a strong emphasis on sustainable husbandry, but their culture is now threatened.
Italy’s Legendary Cowboys of the Maremma, Photographs by Gabrielle Saveri, is a photographic exploration that has appeared in premiere institutions in the United States about the authentic working Butteri, and their devoted followers.
Italian Cowboys: An American eye on the heart of Maremma, Photographs by Gabrielle Saveri, is a new traveling photographic exhibition featuring new and earlier work. The exhibition currently resides at Caccia al Piano in Bolgheri, Italy. The exhibition will run until November 15, 2025.
I welcome new bookings for either exhibition starting on December 1, 2025.
